Thesis work marches on.......

My work these past weeks has consisted mainly of winding lengths of monofilament on this wonderful weaving device, a standing warping mill or wheel.

The rhythm of this process allows for a calm space to open within my working process. This space has been vital to the life of my work. It takes hours to wind these lengths during which I pray and sing.

The process of winding becoming "an antidote to despair,

as stated about Eva Hesse's process as well

Tuesday night's have been glorious, as my friends come to help me with these studio tasks. Communal labor is enjoyable and brings great joy.

It that time of the year for a THESIS!

My first attempt at hand dyed skeins of cotton, linen and silk.....

The Thesis season has begun. My committee has given me the green light to pursue thesis work. And I have the dates for my show. March 12 -16th 2012. wow I have got lots to do before then but here is some beginnings.........

What: The Spring semester starts tomarrow. I am looking down the barrel of a loaded gun. In December I passed my second year review, which means that my colleagues believe that I am ready to pursue Thesis work. Such an exciting prospect. I pray that this semester would be filled with exciting discoveries. Indeed, it is a privilege to be an art maker. I constant tugging on my attention and life. Sorta like when our kitten Olafur jumps onto my shoulder while I am reading or internetting.

I just hope to not lose all the ideas through the business of life.

Now I am working on a Lithograph for Frogman's Print Workshop Assistant Portfolio. Not due till April 1 but who am I kidding. I need all the time I can get. :)

I have decided that if I state my artistic intentions out on this blog I may actually have to own up to following them through. Although I don't know how many of you are listening or if these are floating out into the "intranets" nowhere space (on the line).

So if you are listening..........
I have discovered a cyclical nature to what I make. For a while I enjoy the freedom and flurry of making sculptures. Then I take photos and make drawings. Prints.
A 2-d world free of hanging and structural issues.

My next intention: Attempt to print these (below) photos onto frosted mylar.

While I was installing the below portion of this work, a band of little children ran through the tunnel.
I watched as they dived into the space beneath the fabric sculpture.
Frozen in air.
Motion and excitement of little voices and bodies.

There was no fear there. Just enjoyment. No hesitation, just movement.
Let's make a life of that.

My current artist to drool over is Anne Lindberg. I recently went to an artist talk at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS. She was whitty, eloquent, and simply a joy to listen to. Her work is beautiful. Haunting.

At the Nerman, her piece was an installation of various yellow threads. So simple. Yet bright and brilliant. Glowing. And a little disorienting. I am going to sit in front of it one of these days. Just right there on the gallery floor.

The pile has reached its end. Now the time has come to install. I am hoping to possible get a camera which I can use to take shots every 5-10 mins. Then compile the shots into a video.
Hopefully I can obtain a camera from media services. If not then Zach (my husband) knows of some free software which would do this on his point and shoot camera.

Wish me and my helpers luck and if any of you wanna help, come on down to the Kansas Union Tunnel, all day today or sunday!

I am creating an installation!

I apologize for my EXTENDED absence from the blog world but my return lines up quiet nicely with when I left last fall. Excited about the way God has opened the door for this installation, we
(my helpers and I!) shall proceed boldly!
Today I will be working on a press release, which is new territory, but with help from the internet and my fellow professors I hope to write something worthy of rousing some interest.

Currently there is a giant felt cylinder residing in my studio. A temporary structure which I am using to create my fabric sculptures. It is lovely to be surrounded by strange things.

The list of possible projects from the temporary structure:
-Fill with jello.
-resembling a large swimming pool.
-an object of desire which people love to touch.
- "oooo its warm in here"
-putting hamsters inside the structure.
-Fill with bouncy balls and ping pong balls.

Forming the felt into folds is done when the hat is wet, pinning and forming as it dries on the head shaped mold.

Most recently I have been emersing cloth and garments in wax. 'Freezing' them in time and hanging them in space. Have been feeling somewhat like a kitten chasing shinning things in terms of what I am making.

I sam a boy who looked like a Nazi today.

Ayrian youth right in front of my headlights.

Harkening back to those pictures,

those snapshots in black and white.

Trimmed and Proper.

Head shaved up the sides to

Blonde

Blonde tops.

A strong nose, the face of a handsome child.

When he walked

he strutted,

shoes flopping, the black soles heavy with history slapping the gray pavement.

I imagined, as I drove, cutting out his bright technicolor face,

(around the edges of his ears, of course)

then gluing that

So i last posted lies on.....monday........hummm. Sufice it to say this week has been a blur.

I have been praying for you all still though and it has been hard to do that.

Why is it so hard to do the things we should and the things that ultimately give us the most joy?

Instead we do the dull things.

We sleep in when we should be riding our bikes.

We keep our mouths shut when we should be shouting at the top of our lungs.

We keep people out of our lives becasue genuine love is almost always inefficient...

I am guilty.

Perhaps I am not alone....?

So, last night I laid the handful of lies for that day at my feet.

This particular group of lies was especially impactful.

There were small and big pieces.

Fragments of the lives they belonged to.

There were declarations and confessions.

This collection brought me to tears.

When it talks in the New Testament about how Jesus saw the crowd and he had compassion on them.... He was troubled in his heart.

He was moved to tears and to action.

I felt a tiny fraction of that staring at my bed covered in lies.

So to all of you who sent me these, thank you.....

I will be praying that you will believe them NO LONGER!

Let me tell you a little about me.
I make prints.
I write poems.
I pray.
I drink coffee in the shower.

Let me tell you a little about what I am doing now.
I am collecting lies.
I am praying over your lies.
I am making a piece of art
and .....
I need your help.

During this season of Lent I will be collecting, scanning, praying, creating so as to combat the lies that are common to all. These lies supply ungrounded doubt and keep us ineffective.
Every day (hopefully) I will be posting the lies that you have given me.
Along with the truth from scripture...
I hope that this will provide healing and allow you to connect with these lies.
